Ex-Serb rebel, convicted of war crimes in Croatia, arrested in Germany

A MAN, who was in 1997 sentenced by a Croatian court to 10 years for killing a civilian during the 1991-1995 Homeland War in Croatia, was arrested by German police at Frankfurt Airport on his way from Chicago to Belgrade and is now being held in custody, awaiting extradition to Croatia.

The German federal police reported on Thursday that the arrested 55-year-old man, who holds U.S  citizenship, was arrested based on the European arrest warrant.

The man, whose identity was not revealed for privacy reasons, was given the 10 year-sentence for killing a civilian in 1993 during the war in Croatia when he was part of the army of the self-proclaimed Republic of Serb Krajina (RSK).

The Reuters news agency reports that man who was sentenced 23 years ago in Croatia for crimes against humanity never served his prison term.
