MONTENEGRO'S fight against the coronavirus is at a critical point and now the epidemic should start to wane, leading Montenegrin epidemiologist Boban Mugosa said on Friday, confirming that in the last 24 hours 69 new cases of the disease had been detected.

"For days now the number of the newly infected has been around 15% of the number of tested persons... and the epidemic is most likely to start waning. That depends solely on our behaviour," he said.

He added that one person had died of the disease in the last 24 hours, putting the death toll since mid-June at 52.

The total number of active cases is 1,192, or 189 per 100,000 inabitants, Mugosa said, adding that the number of active cases had been halved since the end of last month.

He noted, however, that local epidemiologists were facing the challenge of foreign tourists, who would start arriving now that the country had started opening its borders to nationals of eastern European countries.

Earlier this week Montenegro allowed unconditional entry for nationals of Russia and Azerbaijan, having also added Ukaine on its green list two days ago.
